Cyberbulling

Cyberulling is a big problem in schools and can be charachterized by someone making threats, issuing insults, overall harassment over the web. Playing games I do set my self up for being bullied and I guess it could be considered cyberbulling when someone is consistantly trying to harass me, but I have not had many problems with it over all.
Schools are going to have a difficult time with this because we cannot easily keep a track of what is going on online. There are also alot of freedom of speach laws and these things are not happening in the schools but at home. Schools should try and step in when they are legally able to, and I also think if teachers know about it, they can talk to the student and ask them to stop.
In my classroom I will try and desighn my class so that students can share whats going on with me or a counceler and look for sighns that students are being bullied. I think the only way to really fight this is to have open communication and then also inform students about what they can do to avoid being bullied while online.

  1. Hey Ryan. I am totally with you in that I haven't really ever personally experienced cyber-bullying either. Maybe it is my age or maybe it is that I don't set myself up for it. I only interact on the internet with people that I actually know in real life. Imagine that!
I think that you are also right in setting up a communicative dynamic with students in order to better handle cyber-bullying. The safer the environment we can create for our students the more likely they will be willing to share with us when something like this is going on.

  2. Setting up a safe classroom environment, where kids can share, is essential to help with the bullying issues of any kind! By the way, make sure you check your spelling on your posts.

  3. As a teacher showing students that you are technologically capable and bringing up the topic of bullying is a good way to keep students honest. I think it would help to drive the point home if you had specific examples of cyberbullying to show your students.
